The magazine generally focuses its studio column on articles highlighting more than one studio but Schum & Associates was featured solely in this month's 4-page article written by Jenny Sullivan, a regular columnist in HOW. The article features photos of the studio's black, white and blond (wood) colours. "The neutrality of the space in terms of colour really highlights the people here. Our people are what our creativity is about," says Schum. The idea behind the design was to keep the space simple, yet mixing in some whimsy in such forms as that of a hanging 4-foot Zeppelin model, painstakingly replicated by production manager Scott Fowler, a miniature lifeguard stand, a miniature scale model of a "Johnny on the Spot" and a model of an Adirondack iceboat, to name but a few. Corrugated aluminum is also included as part of the space but softened in an arc-like fashion so that square edges would not be off-putting to visitors. Creative Director, Guy Schum and his team have successfully fashioned what is probably one of the most appealing and least off-putting of any design communications spaces in the area — the space is warm, welcoming, and a haven from which impressive design continues to emanate freely, twenty years after Schum & Associates originally opened it's doors. # # # Schum & Associates is a marketing communications and graphic design firm located in McLean, Virginia.
